My Harlequin Shrimp Would Have Died If I Didn't Do This
My Harlequin Shrimp took care of all of my Asterina starfish and has been on the hunt for more food! I had to do something about it :( I now know this starfish needs a tank with more room.. I should have researched it before buying it but was in a bit of panic mode for finding the HQ shrimp food before he died. Lesson learned!

    Iodine dip for me usually either saves them or prolongs its life. I've had a Fungai plate that was 8 inches in diameter. Had a lot of tissue recession and brown slime. Did a dip for 15 minutes. Back into thank and the next morning tentacles were out and I saw it healing. It lasted another 4 months before dying. No clue why. It was 2 years old.

      @tylerhogg2241 4 дня назад

      Yes and no... they are hard to spot sometimes in the rocks and sand so you can try to pick them out as you see them but it would never really end and they would always be in the tank, they reproduce very quickly and can break into pieces, all of which would grow into a new starfish, Its crazy

    I’m definitely in camp harlequin shrimp should be rental only. While it happens in the wild, I’m not ethically on board with feeding live animals to live animals personally. Kudos for having the guts to discuss the topic as it’s a worthy ethical discussion. Personally, I think I’m more on board with just dropping the starfish in and letting nature take its course. Something about keeping it alive to feed pieces of it just isn’t a good look for the marine aquarium hobby. Although I’m also the same person who tries to not siphon up bristle worms when cleaning the tank so I don’t kill them…. 🤷‍♂️ On the bright side, I’m sure your engagement on this video is going to be through the roof! 😂

    • @TrevorHiller
      @TrevorHiller 5 дней назад

      Ever order from reef cleaners? Probably the largest online seller of inverts. They do not recommend drip acclimation for them. Float to acclimatize temp and drop. I’ve done their method every time with great success. My opinion is drip acclimation is generally not required for inverts.

  • @NoelG-IRE

    My LFS don’t sell Harlequins. They will point you to the local reef club who have a few that they share between tanks. It’s not something you want in a tank permanently. Adding a starfish to feed a shrimp is mind boggling. The starfish will also die eventually. I’ve never seen one survive in a tank less than 100 gallons You should also roll up the seaweed more. Don’t make it so easy for them.

    It's definitely tough to have to do things like this. I wonder why they don't sell them frozen as an option. I read online that someone got their shrimp to eat some frozen brine. Maybe yours will too and it's worth a shot. It's tough because that shrimp is absolutely hungry and trying to sustain itself.

    Typical LFS should take a harlequin back and give you a small credit for it....they're expensive even for the fish store... they can rehome them or at least offer them feedings till rehomed...or you can snip a chocolate starfish leg off and feed him routinely but I'm more of a hire the shrimp then Rehome the shrimp type of person....I always hated cutting the poor chocolate star legs off

  • @anizato
    @anizato 5 дней назад

    you should consider a couple of Chocolate Chip starfish. Supposedly Harlqeuins will eat one arm off of one, and when its the next meal, they will eat the leg off the other one, giving time for the leg of the first starfish to start regrowing. They are pretty smart. Plus, it takes about a month for them to finish a whole 3-4" CC Starfish, they are ($10 on liveaquaria) On another note, if you fold the algae real tight on the clip it'll prevent it from floating around in the tank and it'll keep your tangs occupied for hours. Snails don't live very long, so don't feel bad, you didn't do anything wrong. (;

    Set up a doser for all for reef. It would never give you consistent numbers based on evaporation if its in your ATO. I would definitely tell you to dose a consistent amount.

  • @chocolateblue101
    @chocolateblue101 13 дней назад

    You should look into Kalkwasser before you start dosing All-for-Reef. You can mix with ATO water. Great for nano tanks!

    • @multykiller007
      @multykiller007 11 дней назад

      using kalkwasser in the ATO is pretty much outdated and advised against as it's super unreliable. The amount of dosing you do when you dose via your ATO is determined by how much you evaporate. If you just use a dosing pump you have full controll over how much kalkwasser you dose. This way you won't dose for example 1,5L in the winter and 2,5L in the summer. Plus the rate at which you need to replace your ATO skyrockets with this method as Kalkwasser is pretty aggressive with a PH of about 11,4. But Kalkwasser in general is great stuff. Just don't use it in your ATO.

There are a few saltwater fish stores but still not as many as you’d think. I’m new to the hobby,(since January) and hate had to order all my plants online or try and find them at the big box stores with not much luck. • @Mindboggle100
      @Mindboggle100 14 дней назад

      I actually tracked dowan a used Red Sea Max 250. It looks amazing in terms of the apperance in a room setting. However that tank design isn't the easiest to manage. Some of the newer models Res Sea put out , are big improvemnets. If you really want a hooded tank, options are limited. The Max 250 is cheap to purchase used, if you decide to go with one... I honestly don't think any reef tank is easy to keep, your mileage may vary! :)

  • @moereefer

    Put the torch in the other tank. No 2 tanks are the same. If you have cyno usually it’s because of low nutrients or large differences between Phosphate and Nitrate levels

  • @TrevorHiller
    @TrevorHiller 14 дней назад

    I couldn’t quite tell from the video, but typically the ATO sensor goes in the pump chamber as that is the first chamber to drop its level due to evaporation in an all in one tank. If you don’t have it there, try that. If you do, then do your plan!

    • @DreamStateLiving
      @DreamStateLiving 14 дней назад

      Yup, that’s the one it’s in! I have to actively watch it to see what might be happening but haven’t caught it at the right time have only heard it activate twice lol

    • @TrevorHiller
      @TrevorHiller 14 дней назад

      Good deal. Maybe use a syringe or a turkey baster to suck some water out of the return pump chamber while you’re standing in front of it so it activates. Then you can just dump the water back in when you’re done.

    • @NoelG-IRE
      @NoelG-IRE 13 дней назад

      The biggest issue with ATO’s in AIO tanks is snails cleaning the overflow teeth and slowing down your return rate which in turn triggers the ATO for too long. It happens in dumped tanks too but the more water volume the less issue. I previously had an AIO and used the Tunze nano ATO which allows to select 2 limits on the time the pump stays on. I had it set to 40 seconds which meant it wouldn’t add more than a litre each time. You could set it to 240 seconds for bigger tanks if I recall correctly. The second biggest issue is trying to keep the sensor clean and not have algae grow all over it. I actually had to black out the back section of my AIO to stop this happening, but cleaning at least once a week should keep it in check. I’d maybe do it twice a week if it wasn’t covered. Algae grows quickest on clean surfaces. Better off blacking it out but keep cleaning it at least monthly or with every water change.
